Understanding spousal support in Michigan

On Behalf of | Sep 21, 2020 | Divorce |

When a couple in the Farmington Hills area gets married, they usually believe their marriage will last forever. They work together supporting each other’s hopes and dreams, including their profession and their education. Unfortunately, not every marriage is destined for eternity. When a divorce becomes imminent a person may wonder how spousal support is awarded.

Alimony, or spousal support, is a financial amount awarded to one spouse during some divorce proceedings. There are certain types of spousal support that may be awarded in Michigan divorce proceedings:

  • Temporary: This type of support occurs when one spouse needs financial support during the divorce process.
  • Periodic: This is the most common type of spousal support in Michigan. A judge will award support for a person who needs time for job training, education, etc. that will help the person become more financially stable.
  • Permanent: This is awarded typically when the couple has been married for a long time and the spouse will not be able to get a job due to age or disability.
  • Lump sum. This may occur if a spouse is able to pay the entire support sum in one payment.

Spousal support is important for many people in Michigan. If a person is feeling like their marriage is heading to a likely divorce, they may want to speak with an attorney who specializes in divorce. An attorney can help their client understand their options when it comes to spousal support and what they may be eligible for. They can make sure their client’s needs are met both now and into the future and can help protect their legal rights.
