How to handle the custody swap

On Behalf of | Feb 19, 2020 | Firm News |

When parents get a divorce, children often split their time between both parents. While joint physical custody can ensure that both parents spend time with the kids, moving between houses can sometimes be difficult for children. It is a good idea for parents to make this transition as easy as possible.

Sometimes a transition between houses can be difficult if kids do not have to follow the same rules at both houses. Fatherly.com says it is important for parents to have the same rules for the kids. It is usually easier for kids to go to each parent’s house when they know they will go to bed and do their homework at the same time each day, regardless of where they are. Parents may also want to agree on the consequences of bad behavior. If one parent says a child cannot watch television because of bad behavior, then it is important for the other parent to uphold this decision. Additionally, moving between houses can be hard if the kids do not know when they are leaving. It is a good idea to have a calendar at both houses. This can help the kids keep track of the week and see exactly when they are going to their other parent’s house.

Transitioning between houses can also be easier for the kids when they see their parents getting along. According to Very Well Family, children may feel anxious if they know that their parents are uncomfortable. It is a good idea for parents to remain calm and positive about the children’s other parent. People may want to talk to their kids about all the fun things they will do with their other parent. This can help remind the kids that it is okay for them to enjoy their time with their other parent. Additionally, this can remind parents that their children will be okay once they leave.

Living in two houses can be difficult for kids because they have to pack every few weeks. It is a good idea for people to make sure that their kids always bring their favorite comfort items to the other house. Parents may want to let the kids help pack so they can choose what they bring with them.
